Gameness have been around since 1998, releasing gis that have won the hearts of many BJJ practitioners. This is thanks to their durable build and innovative thought process that goes into developing and enhancing what we perceive as the traditional BJJ GI.

Throughout our Gameness BJJ Gi review, we’re going to be taking a look at three of their most popular and highly sort after gis – the Air Gi, Pearl Gi and Feather Gi.

Let’s get to it.

Who are Gameness?

gameness logo

Gameness are a wildly popular brand of BJJ gear, offering a range of different equipment such as gis, belts, rash guards, clothing and have recently started adding boxing gloves to their range of products.

What makes Gameness stand out from the crowd is their desire to create gis that are built to last and endure endless hours spend rolling and training on the matt. As such, many of the gis spend years in a ‘testing phase’ before being released

With that in mind, when you buy a Gameness gi, you know it’s going to last.

What’s more, Gameness take what they’ve learnt from over 20 years of experience, and continue to innovate new ideas and implement them into their gis. A prime example of this can be seen in their ‘Elite Gi’, which features a built in rash guard, something I’m pretty sure very few other brands are doing.

All in all, Gameness have rightly earned their place as one of the best BJJ gi brands in the world, and it looks like they’re here to stay.

How Much Do Gameness BJJ Gis Cost?

As is common with a lot of BJJ brands, Gameness cater for a variety of different needs and budgets. Whether you’re still picking up the ropes of BJJ, or have just received your black belt, there will be a Gameness BJJ gi for you.

With that said, you’re typically able to find a Gameness gi for anywhere between $100-$200, depending on the model of gi you go for.

While this may sound rather pricey, when you consider how long you’ll have the gi for, they actually offer pretty amazing value for money.

Who are the Gis Meant for?

Considering the variety of gis and their price tags, Gameness really do cater for everybody. They’ve got lightweight gis, heavy gis, cheap gis, expensive gis, you name it, they’ve got it.

Whatever your needs, you’ll be able to find a Gameness BJJ gi to suit you.

The three gis we’re going to be discussing today, whilst all very similar aesthetically, do vary from gi to gi, so I’m sure you’ll find one that takes your fancy.

Ok, lets’ start reviewing these Gameness BJJ gis.

Gameness Air Gi Review

About

The first gi we’re going to be taking a look at is the Gameness Air Gi, one of Gameness’ most popular gis and for good reason.

As the name suggests, the Air gi is designed to be lightweight. This makes it ideal for training in warm climates, or for those of you who are competing and are looking to weigh as little as possible upon weighing in.

Design

As you would expect, the Gameness Air gi is available in blue, black and white options.

If this is going to be your training gi, I’d recommend going for either blue or black. I’ve found that white gis can go a yellowish color from the sweat after a while of use. With a colored gi, you won’t be able to see the sweat stains, allowing you to use them for longer without looking dirty.

Compared to the vast majority of BJJ gis on the market, the Gameness Air gi features very little in terms of branding, featuring only one Gameness logo alongside the right arm of the Kimono. Similarly with the pants, a large “G” is featured at the top of the right leg, which is about the extent of the branding on the pants.

The lack of branding allows you to add your own patches if you so desire, and feels very much like an old school style of gis from the back in the day.

The skirt of the Kimono is lined with a different color trim depending on the color gi you go for. For example, the black gi features a red trim, where as the blue and white gi feature a black trim. Although a very subtle touch, it does accent the gi nicely, which otherwise may have been a little plain.

Quality

In terms of quality, there really isn’t much to complain about here. The GI itself is IBJJF (International BJJ Federation) approved, meaning that it’s competition legal.

The Kimino is made using 350GSM pearl weave material, which is definitely on the lighter side of things (we actually included this gi on our list of the best lightweight BJJ gis here). Some people have commented that the Air Gi looks a little flimsy, however that’s purely down to the fact that it’s designed to be lightweight, and therefore not so rigid.

The pants weigh 8oz, which again is fairly lightweight, as most BJJ gi pants weigh around 10-12oz. Ripstop material is used to create the pants, which as you can probably guess by the name, is designed to stop rips.

With material like cotton and twill, if a rip occurs it can get bigger when you wash it. Fortunately, that isn’t the case with ripstop, as it’s designed to prevent this from happening, which is particularly ideal for BJJ pants.

All in all, the Gamness Air gi is definitely built to last, and thanks to it’s lightweight design, is ideal for both training and competing.

Price

The Gamness Air Gi is one of the cheapest gis that Gameness has to offer, which in turn makes it incredibly popular amongst beginners who don’t want to fork out a ton of cash on their first gi.

Similarly, if you’re looking for a cheap gi to train in, or even compete in, the Gamness gi definitely fits the bill.

Gameness Pearl Gi Review

About

The next gi we’re going to be taking a look at in this review is the Gameness Pearl Gi. This is an extremely affordable BJJ gi that’s built to endure the endless pulls, yanks and tugs that you’ll encounter in BJJ.

Design

As with a lot of the gis by Gameness, they let the quality do the talking, not the design. While still a very good looking gi, minimal amounts of branding an embroidery have been used in order to provide a very clean looking gi.

The Gameness logo can be seen on the right of the chest chest, with an embroidered “G” located on the top right hand side of the pants and “G” patches on each of the shoulders. This may sound like a lot of branding, but the size of each patch and embroidered logos are relatively small when compared to some other big name BJJ brands.

The inside of the collar has also been rubberized so that it dries a lock quicker than most other gis, which is incredibly handy if you’re training on a regular basis in the same gi.

Finally, as you would expect, the pearl weave comes in blue, black and white, all of which look great.

Quality

Gameness have found a healthy balance between durability and lightness with this gi, making use of 550GSM, premium cotton fabric to construct the Kimono. The use of premium cotton makes this one of the most comfortable gis currently available, despite being relatively thick.

When training, and even competing, a lot of gis can get uncomfortable and can even bring your skin out in a rash. With that in mind, it’s nice to see Gameness taking extra steps to make their gis as easy to wear as possible, which I’m sure is a major reason they’re so poplar.

It’s in the pants that I have a slight issue, all be it not a big one. Gameness have opted to use 12oz cotton/ polly blend twill pants, which although are comfortable, I’m not sure how tear resistant they’re going to be. Plus, 12oz is particularly heavy for a pair of BJJ pants, so you may not want to wear them when competing if you’re close to your weight limit.

Having said that, I have complete faith in Gameness and their ability to produce durable gis, so I’m sure the pants won’t be a problem.

Another clear pointer of Gameness’ dedication to producing high quality gis in the stitching, all of which has been reinforced throughout the gi in order to make it more durable. A tell tale sign of a poorly constructed gi is when the seems start to tear. Fortunately, you won’t be experiencing that in Pearl Gi though.

Price

To this day, I’m still surprised at how cheap Gameness offer their Pearl Gi for. If you’re on the hunt for a bargain, I think you’ve just found it.

Gameness Feather Gi Review

gameness feather bjj gi review

About

The last gi we’re going to reviewing is the Gameness Feather Gi, which is somewhat of a blend between the previous two gis we’ve discussed. If you’re looking for a gi that isn’t too heavy, but isn’t too thick, then the Gameness Feather Gi finds a happy median that you’ll appreciate.

Design

Available in blue, white and black, this is the boldest of the three gis we’re reviewing today. The feather gi features Gameness branding on both sleeves, the chest and the pants.

The top of black and white Kimonos features a red trim, that although subtle, adds a bit of flare to the gi. Similarly, the blue version of the Feather Gi features a white trim in the same location.

Quality

Every BJJ practitioner has their own preference in terms of how thick they like their gi to be. The two gis we discussed earlier as some what at opposite ends of the spectrum, with the Pearl gi being much thicker and the Air gi being much thinner.

The Feather gi falls dead in the middle, being made of 450GSM material, which is very much run of the mill in terms of a gis’ thickness. The idea here is to create a gi that provides a decent amount of thickness, however won’t weigh you down whilst training, no will it make you overly hot.

As with the vast majority of Gameness’ gis, the Feather gi features reinforced stitching along all major stress points such as the knee and crotch. This helps to prevent the gi from tearing whilst you’re mid-roll, which is pretty embarrassing, especially if it’s in the crotch region.

If you’re looking for a new competition gi, the Gameness Feather Gi is a great option, being IBJJF competition approved you’re able to both train and compete comfortably in this bad boy.

Price

Being a high quality gi suitable for both competition and training, the price point of the Feather Gi is somewhat high. That being said, you’ll be able to wear the gi for years so come, much longer than if you opted for a lower quality, cheaper gi.

Alternative Option: War Tribe Hydrogen Gi

Understandably, everyone’s got different tastes and preferences, especially when it comes to BJJ gis that are worn class after class, week after week.

As such, I thought I’d include an alternative brand that’s equally as reputable as Gameness and offers gis at a similar price point.

War Tribe are a relatively new brand of BJJ gis, especially if you consider that Gameness have been doing this for over 20 years. That being said, they’re quickly becoming a go to brand for BJJ gis and have a selection of beautiful gis that are equally durable as they are well designed.

We’ve actually got a whole War Tribe Gi review and comparison that you can check out if you want.
