What is BJ Thinking

Date Added: May 23, 2008 09:40:37 PM

In an interview with Kevin Iole, BJ Penn is quoted as saying:

“Honestly, if I go out there and I destroy Sean Sherk in one round, I’m really going to have a hard time getting motivated to fight Florian or Huerta,” Penn said. “No matter what anybody says, it would be hard. A fight with Matt Hughes would be a great one for Hawaii, but a fight with St. Pierre, that would be one for the world.”

I dont understand why BJ feels the need to jump weight classes so much. He has fought at 155, 170 and 205 in recent years with mild success, even though he is in everyones top 3 for pound for pound most talented fighters.

If Penn is truly interested in building a legacy for himself, and finally living up to all his hype, then he truly needs to stick to one weight class. He can, if he chooses, be the most dominant lightweight fighter this sport has ever seen if he can find the motivation to stay at this weight.

There is not another fighter at 155 lbs. with the all around game Penn has displayed. He would easily defeat any top competitor the UFC throws his way and with the stable of fighters the UFC is amassing at lightweight there is no reason to believe he wouldnt have match after match against exciting, up and coming fighters and grizzled veterans.

I would love to see BJ move back up for a second bout with GSP or to finish his rubber match with Matt Hughes, but to build a legacy you need to have a proven track record in your division before attempting to win another.

As much as I like Florian I don't think he can take Penn. BJ is the Anderson Silva of the lower weights. I think by beating Sherk in the way that he did he effectively did clean out the 155 lb division. A move up may not be a bad choice for him right now.

Cleaning out a division does not mean taking out 1-2 top competitors. He still needs to fight Huerta/Florian and a few up and comers and vets like Griffin, Spencer Fisher, Tavares, Maynard, Diaz and more.

Cleaning out a division should consist of constantly defending a title for 5-6 fights or so. Silva when Silva beats Okami he will have defeated 3 of his biggest threats and 5 of the top MW in the UFC.
